MISHKA SHUBALY - The Definitive Interview!
Friday Feb 11, 2022
Friday Feb 11, 2022
RMA-Episode 74 Show Notes:
Mishka Shubaly wears many hats; writer, musician, ultrarunner, podcaster. His Kindle Singles for Amazon have all been bestsellers. He writes true stories about drink, drugs, disasters, desire, deception and their aftermath. His work has been praised for its grit, humor, fearlessness and heart.
His first hardcover memoir, "I Swear I'll Make It Up to You" is a compelling and important book that describes in detail Mishka’s journey from alcoholic drug abuser to sober ultrarunner.
In April 2020 Mishka published the NY Times Best-Selling audible book Cold Turkey, a step by step roadmap for approaching the first month of sobriety. With the benefit and experience of twelve years of sobriety, Mishka addresses the slippery nature of alcoholism, and the messy, anxiety-ridden process of making the decision to stop drinking once and for all.
Much like your intrepid RMA hosts, Shubaly believes that there is no one-size-fits-all plan for recovery. He refutes the notion that the one and only solution for those struggling are 12-step programs and provides a guide for those who want a different approach to getting sober.
On this week’s episode, Mike and Nat engage in a free-ranging conversation with Mishka on topics ranging from harm reduction and the use of cannabis in recovery, to the nature of addiction, running, and the most effective ways to quit drinking and ensure a lasting recovery. It’s a great conversation with a fascinating guest who holds a controversial opinion or two. Hope you enjoy it!

RMA-Episode 73 Show Notes:
This week on RMA it’s the Recovery in the News Roundup, coming to you from the new studio at Castle Greyskull! Mike and Nat combed through SoberliningsPlaybook’s Wednesday Weekly, and picked out some stories that bear further investigation. We do a deep dive on Dry January’s effect on small business, why women aren’t seeking SUD treatment at the same rate as men despite an uptick in use and overdoses, whether long-term support in recovery is a desirable avenue given the current state of the rehab industry, and why fentanyl test strips are still illegal in Wisconsin. Phew!
As if that wasn’t enough, we also managed to get in a week in weird, Monksters Speak, an analysis of the movie Groundhog Day as a Buddhist allegory, and do an extended week in review, on an exhaustive, encyclopedic, free-range episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages.

RMA-Episode 72 Show Notes:
Are You Talkin’ to Me? Negative self-talk and a poor self-image are recurring issues for people in recovery. Thoughts are powerful, and they can shape a person’s life and impact the way they experience the world. This week, on a special Get Smart with Erin, the gang does a deep dive into the world of negative self-talk and discusses strategies to quiet that voice in your head that keeps whispering those pesky negative thoughts.
Plus, this week RMA, in association with Sober Linings Playbook, we bring you a new segment, The Big 3 with SLP, where Grant Boyken picks his top three stories of the month that relate to recovery and discusses why they are important. Tune in, turn on and bliss-out.
Plus, the week in review, Recovery in the News and the Week in Weird on a life affirming, critically though-out, mindfully positive episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages.

RMA-Episode 71 Show Notes:
Is anonymity in recovery a good thing, or does it stand in the way of the effort to de-stigmatize addiction? The movie Anonymous People purports to answer that question, and it is the topic of discussion on today’s episode. According to the filmmakers of this groundbreaking 2013 documentary, deeply entrenched social stigma and mass participation in widely successful anonymous 12-step groups have kept recovery voices silent and faces hidden for decades. The vacuum created by this silence has been filled by sensational mass media depictions of addiction that continue to perpetuate a lurid public fascination with the dysfunctional side of what is a preventable and treatable health condition.
Mike and Nat discuss the movie and debate with the Monksters whether the disease model of addiction is helpful or hurtful to people in recovery.
Plus, the week in review, Recovery in the News and the Week in Weird on a semi-anonymous, bat outta hell, sober-curious episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages.

We spend a lot of time here at RMA talking about the mental health aspects of addiction and recovery. This week we are going to shift gears and get physical. What are the roles of diet and exercise in recovery and how do they fit into the maintenance of sobriety over the long term? What are the benefits of starting and maintaining some kind of exercise program? How do years of drinking or drug use impact the body’s ability to process nutrition? For the answer to these questions and for advice on how to leverage diet and exercise to bolster your recovery, tune into this week’s episode of RMA.

RMA-Episode 69 Show Notes:
Imagine being a documentary filmmaker and following your subjects around for 36 years. That’s what Jon Alpert did when he documented the lives of three petty criminals and drug addicts in Newark NJ, from 1984 to 2021. The resulting movie, Life of Crime, is an achingly candid and at times brutal documentary for HBO spanning a lifetime of crime, incarceration and the compounding ravages of addiction. Mike and Nat discuss the film and what lessons it teaches about the way society deals with the related issues of poverty, intergenerational crime and drug abuse.
