RMA-Episode 80 Show Notes:
This week on a very special episode of RMA, Mike and Nat welcome Erin back to the podcast to talk about boundaries and codependency. Boundaries are the rules you create to let people know how to treat you. Healthy boundaries create separation between people. In codependency, these boundaries are weak. You feel responsible for how other people feel and want to make them feel better. Mike and Nat, two people-pleasers that don’t like to say no, try to understand the how and why of setting healthy boundaries. Can Erin help them figure it out?
Plus, Grant stops by for The Big Three with SLP, Mike shares some lessons learned from a sober business trip, and the Monksters Speak about why it’s so hard to tell people you don’t drink anymore. Also, a new review, a listener email, RITN and The Week in Weird on a calm, assertive and respectful episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages.

RMA-Episode 79 Show Notes:
Compare and despair! It has been said that comparison is the thief of joy, but we still do it all the time. Why? Maybe it’s grounded in self-esteem, an area that typically proves challenging to a person suffering with substance abuse disorder. One theory is that you have an unconscious belief that you lack self-worth. Because you already believe you are in some way inadequate, your brain constantly searches for evidence to support its theory. When you compare yourself to other people, you always assume they're prettier, smarter, more successful, and better. What a mess! Social media exacerbates this condition by only showing the positive parts of people’s lives, thereby distorting reality and exacerbating underlying issues like depression and anxiety. How can we navigate through the pitfalls of social media and keeping up with the Joneses while maintaining a sense of self-worth? Mike and Nat have some ideas…
Also, the life update, listener emails, and Monkster’s Speak on a meandering but still on topic episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages.

Can America Recover? Author and Recovery Luminary Evan Haines Joins Us!
Friday Mar 18, 2022
Friday Mar 18, 2022
RMA-Episode 78 Show Notes:
Can America Recover? Evan Haines sure thinks so, and he is our guest this week on RMA. In addition to being the co-founder and co-CEO of Oro House Recovery Centers, Evan, along with his partner Bob Forest, are the authors of the new book, Can America Recover, a sprawling look at the past, present and future of the recovery movement in America, and where America itself fits into the addiction narrative.
Can America Recover posits that treating the symptoms of the individual and treating the addict as a scapegoat, absolve us from the pressing need to address the larger, more intractable social problems of childhood trauma, alienation and isolation that are the breeding grounds for addiction.
Oro Recovery believes that the way to treat addiction is not by using shame or forcing a client to adhere to a rigid set of rules, but through compassionate care, deep listening and creating an environment where the individual feels empowered to utilize the healing power that already exists inside of them.
It’s a great conversation with a fascinating polymath, and we know you’re going to like this one.

RMA-Episode 77 Show Notes:
This week Mike and Nat continue their mini-series on mental health in recovery by tackling the multi-headed beast that is PTSD. What is it? How does it manifest? Most importantly, what can we do about it?
Traditional treatment of substance abuse in America often focuses on the symptoms (alcohol or drug use), rather than the underlying problems, (trauma and underlying mental health issues). Much like giving someone an Advil when they have a brain aneurysm, treating the symptom may bring temporary relief, but it doesn’t address the underlying problem. Is it time for a paradigm shift in the way we look at addiction and recovery? The guys break it down.
PLUS, Mike drops a story of acid and delinquency at a Dead show in the not too distant past, The Monksters share what they’ve been thinking about lately, Recovery in the News looks at the latest research on the health benefits of alcohol (there are none), and the week in weird wonders whether that thing on the sidewalk is an alien or an embryo, on a psychedelic, empathetic, copacetic episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages.

RMA-Episode 76 Show Notes:
AND, we’re back! After a week of darkness, RMA returns with an episode for the ages. Mike and Nat dive into a review of David Poses groundbreaking 2021 work, The Weight of Air: A Story of the Lies about Addiction and the Truth about Recovery. In The Weight of Air, Poses chronicles his struggle to overcome mental illness and addiction. By age nineteen, he'd been through medical detox, inpatient rehab, twelve-step programs, and a halfway house. He saw his drug use as a symptom of depression, but the experts insisted that addiction was the problem. Over the next thirteen years, he went from one relapse to the next, drowning in guilt, shame, and secrets, until he finally found an evidence-based treatment that not only saved his life, but helped him thrive.
Tragically, Poses passed away at the end of February. The cause of death has not been announced. Mike and Nat utilize the review of his book as a launching-off point for a discussion about depression and anxiety and how recovery from substance abuse doesn’t make other pre-existing mental illnesses magically disappear.
PLUS, Grant drops a Big Three segment into this week’s show, The Monksters speak about their experiences with depression and anxiety, Recovery in the News looks some quasi-scientific claims being made by the weed industry, and the week in weird asks, “is that a mermaid in your museum or are you just happy to see me” on a medically assisted, not overly anxious, slightly under the weather episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages.

Friday Feb 18, 2022
RMA-Episode 75 Show Notes:
What is self care, and why is it important? Building off this week’s Monksters Speak, Mike and Nat do a deep dive into the concept of self care and talk about how getting your life in balance is important to a healthy and successful recovery. Making sure you set aside the time for self-care is an important tool for attaining and maintaining that balance. But what is it really? Sometimes self-care looks like going out for a run and eating a salad, but other times it’s sitting on the sofa eating ice-cream and binging Netflix. The only way you can discover which one you really need is to develop some self-awareness. How do we do that? They guys have some ideas…
PLUS, Nat regals us with his classic superbowl relapse story, Recovery in the News looks at deep brain stimulation, and bigfoot returns to the Week in Weird, on an alkaline water soaked, alpha wave generating, essential oil infused episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages.

MISHKA SHUBALY - The Definitive Interview!
Friday Feb 11, 2022
Friday Feb 11, 2022
RMA-Episode 74 Show Notes:
Mishka Shubaly wears many hats; writer, musician, ultrarunner, podcaster. His Kindle Singles for Amazon have all been bestsellers. He writes true stories about drink, drugs, disasters, desire, deception and their aftermath. His work has been praised for its grit, humor, fearlessness and heart.
His first hardcover memoir, "I Swear I'll Make It Up to You" is a compelling and important book that describes in detail Mishka’s journey from alcoholic drug abuser to sober ultrarunner.
In April 2020 Mishka published the NY Times Best-Selling audible book Cold Turkey, a step by step roadmap for approaching the first month of sobriety. With the benefit and experience of twelve years of sobriety, Mishka addresses the slippery nature of alcoholism, and the messy, anxiety-ridden process of making the decision to stop drinking once and for all.
Much like your intrepid RMA hosts, Shubaly believes that there is no one-size-fits-all plan for recovery. He refutes the notion that the one and only solution for those struggling are 12-step programs and provides a guide for those who want a different approach to getting sober.
On this week’s episode, Mike and Nat engage in a free-ranging conversation with Mishka on topics ranging from harm reduction and the use of cannabis in recovery, to the nature of addiction, running, and the most effective ways to quit drinking and ensure a lasting recovery. It’s a great conversation with a fascinating guest who holds a controversial opinion or two. Hope you enjoy it!

This week on RMA it’s the Recovery in the News Roundup, coming to you from the new studio at Castle Greyskull! Mike and Nat combed through SoberliningsPlaybook’s Wednesday Weekly, and picked out some stories that bear further investigation. We do a deep dive on Dry January’s effect on small business, why women aren’t seeking SUD treatment at the same rate as men despite an uptick in use and overdoses, whether long-term support in recovery is a desirable avenue given the current state of the rehab industry, and why fentanyl test strips are still illegal in Wisconsin. Phew!
As if that wasn’t enough, we also managed to get in a week in weird, Monksters Speak, an analysis of the movie Groundhog Day as a Buddhist allegory, and do an extended week in review, on an exhaustive, encyclopedic, free-range episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages.

If you’re in trouble with substance abuse and need help, reach out. There are thousands of people who have put problems with addiction in their rear-view mirrors and you can be one of them. While we neither endorse nor condemn any particular program, the sheer number of available AA and NA meetings suggest that reaching out to those organizations would be a good first step on the road to recovery.
